The Sendai Aoba Matsuri is a historic festival held in the heart of Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture. Revived in 1985 to commemorate the 350th anniversary of the passing of Lord Date Masamune, the festival preserves the traditions of the 'Toshogu Shrine Festival,' once the largest in the Sendai domain. This major regional event offers a deep dive into local culture through grand Yamaboko float parades, samurai processions, and the unique, rhythmic Suzume Odori (sparrow dance).
The main attraction is the parade of magnificent Yamaboko floats. These massive structures, some reaching 6 meters in height and weighing up to 8 tons, move majestically through the streets of Sendai. Be sure to spot the 'Masamune-ko Kabuto Yamaboko,' modeled after Lord Masamune's helmet, and the striking 'Otai Yamaboko' featuring a giant sea bream.
Another highlight is the 'Suzume Odori' (Sparrow Dance). The dancers move to a lively rhythm, creating a high-energy atmosphere. A competition is held during the 'Yoimatsuri' on Saturday. On Sunday's 'Honmatsuri,' the city comes alive with historical samurai processions and the Aoba Shrine Mikoshi procession, offering a vivid spectacle of Sendai's history.

To see the Yamaboko float parade up close, we recommend checking the parade route through the arcades and streets in advance. If you cannot attend on the parade day, you can still enjoy viewing the magnificent floats displayed in the shopping arcades starting from Wednesday.
