Senami Taisai Festival

Event Overview

Senami Taisai is one of the three major festivals of Murakami City, held at the historic Senami Jinja. This shrine boasts over 1,200 years of history and is dedicated to Ukemochi-no-kami, the deity of food. Reflecting the rich history of Senami as a prosperous port town, the festival features 'oshagiri'—ornate, two-wheeled floats that move through the streets with incredible energy and local passion.

Highlights and How to Enjoy

The main attraction is the dynamic movement of the 'oshagiri' floats. Unlike standard four-wheeled floats, these two-wheeled structures are designed for agility, allowing them to navigate steep slopes and narrow streets with ease. The sight of the float pullers chanting 'Kiyari-uta' (traditional work songs) while striking bells and drums as they charge up the hills is truly breathtaking.

There are five distinct floats (Hamacho, Nakamachi, Shinden, Kamicho, and Gakkocho), each with its own unique character. For example, the Hamacho float features a magnificent 'Ofune-sama' (a ceremonial ship) symbolizing the town's former maritime prosperity. You can also witness the unique local style of the Shinden float, which moves to the rhythm of traditional Bon dances.

Eve Festival

Starting the afternoon of September 3, the oshagiri floats begin their procession through the various neighborhoods.

Main Festival (September 4)

• *Around 04:00**: The 'Saki-daiko' ceremony begins, signaling the start of the festival with drums echoing through the town.
• *Around 06:00**: The oshagiri float processions begin in each neighborhood.
• *Around 09:00**: All floats gather in front of Senami Jinja for the sacred ritual to transfer the deity to the portable shrine.
• *Around 10:00**: The grand 'Togyo' procession begins, led by the portable shrine followed by the five majestic oshagiri floats.
• *Around 14:00**: The floats charge up the hills near Yokomachi, accompanied by the rhythmic striking of bells and traditional songs.
• *Around 20:00**: The festival reaches its climax. The crowds gather at the bottom of the slope in front of Senami Jinja in Hamacho to witness the most intense and high-energy ascent of the night.
