The Sakoshi no Funa Matsuri is a traditional ritual held in the Sakoshi district of Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture. Celebrated at the Osake Shrine, this festival has long been held to pray for safe voyages and maritime prosperity. The area's history as a bustling port for salt-transporting ships is deeply woven into this event, which is designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan. The absolute highlight is the "Funa-togyo" (Ship Procession). After the Shinto deities and lion dancers move from the shrine to the shore, a fleet of over a dozen traditional Japanese ships (Wabun) sets sail. The sight of these ships, adorned with colorful banners and flags, moving toward Ikishima island like a grand maritime parade, is truly majestic. As the sun sets, the atmosphere shifts; each boat is lit with traditional lanterns, creating a mesmerizing trail of light across the ocean.   • *Yoimiya (Eve of the Festival)**: Rituals are held at the tomb before the Kofun at Ikishima, accompanied by traditional songs and lion dances throughout the town.
  • *Hongu (Main Ceremony)**: After the noon deity procession from the shrine, the grand maritime procession of 12 traditional ships begins, heading toward Ikishima.
  • *Kanko (Return of the Deity)**: At dusk, the illuminated fleet returns to the shrine amidst ceremonial bonfires, marking the conclusion of the festivities.
