The Otoma Pass Festival is a traditional event dedicated to the memory of the many Christian martyrs who lived and died in this region during the early Meiji era. This ceremony honors those who remained steadfast in their faith despite intense persecution during the late Edo and early Meiji periods. Held annually on May 3rd, the event centers around the Otome Pass Maria Chapel near the Tsuwano Catholic Church, offering a profound moment where history and faith intersect.
The most striking part of the festival is the "Pilgrimage Procession," where devotees walk in a solemn line centered around a statue of the Virgin Mary. This procession travels toward the Otome Pass, located about 2 kilometers from the Tsuwano Catholic Church, creating a deeply reverent atmosphere. At noon, a grand "Outdoor Mass" is held at the pass. The beautiful echoes of sacred hymns dedicated to the martyrs provide a sense of peace and deep spiritual reflection for all attendees. It is a rare opportunity to connect with the history of Japan's "Hidden Christians" while admiring the beautiful stained glass and architecture of the chapel.
