Omama Gion Matsuri is a traditional Gion festival with a rich 396-year history, deeply rooted in Omama, Midori City, Gunma Prefecture. As one of the three great Gion festivals of the Joshu region, it has long been held to pray for the prevention of epidemics and for community well-being. Held annually from August 1st to 3rd, the festival features seven distinctive, ornate floats (dashi) that parade through the Honmachi district of Omama, accompanied by the rhythmic sounds of traditional festival music (hayashi). It is a perfect way to experience the authentic heat and spirit of a Japanese summer.
The absolute highlight of this festival is the procession of the seven magnificent floats. Watching these heavy, decorated floats move through the streets alongside the powerful sounds of traditional music is a truly breathtaking sight. You can enjoy different atmospheres depending on the time of day, from the lively daytime parades to the atmospheric evening festivities where the music echoes through the night. From local traditional performing arts and children's dances to the high-energy portable shrine (mikoshi) processions, you will feel the deep-rooted traditions and community spirit that have been passed down through generations.
The festival takes place over three days from August 1st to August 3rd. Please note that the schedule is subject to change.
The main festivities take place along Honmachi Street, spanning from 1-chome to 7-chome in Omama.
