Event Overview

Omama Gion Matsuri is a traditional Gion festival with a rich 396-year history, deeply rooted in Omama, Midori City, Gunma Prefecture. As one of the three great Gion festivals of the Joshu region, it has long been held to pray for the prevention of epidemics and for community well-being. Held annually from August 1st to 3rd, the festival features seven distinctive, ornate floats (dashi) that parade through the Honmachi district of Omama, accompanied by the rhythmic sounds of traditional festival music (hayashi). It is a perfect way to experience the authentic heat and spirit of a Japanese summer.

Venue & Access

The main festivities take place along Honmachi Street, spanning from 1-chome to 7-chome in Omama.

While some parking is available near the venue, it is highly recommended to use public transportation as the area becomes extremely crowded during the event.

Tips for Visitors

For the best experience, position yourself near Honmachi Street where the floats pass by to feel the full impact of the procession. Many events take place into the evening, offering a wonderful way to experience the lively atmosphere of a Japanese summer night. Since the types of events (parades, mikoshi, or float processions) vary by day, we recommend checking the schedule in advance to plan your visit around your favorite highlights.

What to Bring & Etiquette

As this is a summer event, please prepare for the heat by bringing a hat, a folding fan, and plenty of water.
