The Okinawa Zen Taiko Eisa Festival is one of the largest and most significant Eisa festivals in Okinawa Prefecture, held annually in Okinawa City during the weekend following the Obon season. Its roots date back to 1956, originating from the "Zen-to Eisa Competition" designed to boost local commerce in the former Koza City (now Okinawa City). Today, it stands as a vital cultural event that shares the beauty and energy of traditional Eisa with the world.
The main attraction is the breathtaking Eisa dance performances by elite groups from across the prefecture. The thunderous beat of the drums combined with the synchronized movements of dancers in traditional attire creates an overwhelming, high-energy atmosphere. You can also enjoy the buildup to the main event through "Eisa Nights" held throughout Okinawa City starting in June, allowing the festive spirit to rise throughout the city.
