Ohara Hadaka Matsuri is a historic and high-energy traditional festival held annually on September 23 and 24 in Isumi City (formerly Ohara Town), Chiba Prefecture. A total of 18 shrines from the Ohara, Tokai, and Naba districts gather to parade their mikoshi (portable shrines) through the streets and the sea. This festival boasts a deep history, with origins dating back to the Muromachi period or even over 900 years ago depending on the local tradition.

The absolute highlight of this festival is the 'Shiofumi' ritual held on the first day. The sight of 18 massive mikoshi charging headlong into the rough waves of the Pacific Ocean, clashing and surging through the surf, is an overwhelming spectacle of human energy and nature. On the second day, the festival reaches its emotional climax with the 'Owakare-shiki' (Farewell Ceremony). Amidst a mystical atmosphere lit by hundreds of lanterns, the shrines are raised high toward the sky accompanied by soulful, traditional parting songs, creating a truly moving experience.

The festival takes place over two intense days.
The festivities begin with the departure of the shrines from their respective shrines. The Ohara district shrines gather at Kisuga Kashima Shrine for the 'Horaku' ceremony.
The 18 mikoshi then gather at Ohara Fishing Port and parade through the streets.
Around 15:00, the shrines head toward Ohara Beach for the main event: 'Shiofumi.' Watching the shrines brave the crashing waves is a must-see.
Afterward, the procession moves through the shopping district, continuing through the night and into the early morning.
