The Ogiyama Hi Matsuri is a traditional event held at Ohirayama (Ogiyama) in Beppu, Oita Prefecture, serving as a symbolic herald of spring. Established in 1976, this ritual is performed to welcome the arrival of spring to the local hot spring deities, offering the newly budding flora as a tribute. As a key part of the Beppu Hatto Onsen Matsuri, the sight of the massive 'Fan of Fire' glowing against the dark mountainside is a beloved seasonal tradition in Beppu.
The main attraction is the colossal fan-shaped flame that emerges from the darkness. As the fire spreads rapidly through the dried grass, it paints the entire mountainside in a brilliant, glowing orange, creating a truly majestic and otherworldly atmosphere. The contrast between the deep colors of the twilight sky and the intense, burning flames offers a unique photographic opportunity that can only be experienced here.
The event is scheduled for April 2, 2027. The lighting of the fire is expected to begin around 18:30. Please note that since this event is highly dependent on weather conditions, it may be postponed or canceled in the event of bad weather.
