Event Overview

The Narita Gion Matsuri is a traditional festival held in conjunction with the Naritasan Gion-e, a significant religious event at Naritasan Shinshoji Temple in Narita, Chiba. The festival features a grand procession of a sacred mikoshi (portable shrine) housing the deity Dainichi Nyorai. This large-scale event, involving the entire community of Narita, has a history of approximately 300 years and was recognized as a Japan Heritage site in 2016, symbolizing the deep-rooted faith and history of the region.

The main attraction is the sight of numerous ornate floats (dashi) and stalls parading through the streets. A total of 10 magnificent floats create a vibrant and energetic atmosphere. Pay close attention to the music (hayashi) played by the floats: the Edo-style floats (Narita, Nakano-cho, and Honcho) feature the rhythmic 'Edo Hayashi,' while other neighborhoods perform 'Sahara Hayashi,' adding diverse musical textures to the festivities. Watching the powerful procession of the sacred mikoshi near the historic approach to Naritasan is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Tips for Visitors

The festival is centered around the approach to Naritasan Temple. Because the floats and mikoshi parade through the streets, the area will be extremely crowded. We recommend allowing plenty of time for travel to enjoy the historical scenery and the intense energy of the festival.
