Event Overview

Nanbu Himatsuri is a traditional festival held in Nanbu Town, Minamikoma District, Yamanashi Prefecture, during the Obon season. Set along the banks of the Fuji River, the event features dynamic fire rituals. The highlights include the dramatic "Nage-tomoshibi" (torch throwing), the lighting of 108 "Hyakutai" bonfires to honor spirits or ward off pests, and a stunning fireworks display.

The festival's main draw is the intense use of fire. The "Nage-tomoshibi" involves throwing torches toward beehives on poles over 10 meters high, creating a thrilling sight. The "Dai-tomoshibi," a massive bonfire over 6 meters tall made from 30,000 ritual sticks, is lit by local students to pierce the darkness.

At 8:00 PM, the 108 "Hyakutai" bonfires lining 2km of both riverbanks are lit simultaneously, creating an overwhelming glow. The night concludes with 3,000 fireworks, blending ancient fire rituals with modern pyrotechnics for an unforgettable summer night.

The event is held throughout the Nanbu area along the Fuji River. There are two main areas: Sakae-gawa side (2-min walk from Uchifune Station) and Mutsumiai-gawa side (10-min walk from Uchifune Station).

• *By Train**: The nearest station is Uchifune Station on the JR Minobu Line. Special extra trains or increased services are expected between Fuji and Minobu Stations. Please check the JR Central official website for details.
• *By Car**: Follow signs for Route 52 or the Yamanashi Prefectural Fuji-gawa Minobu Line. Due to traffic restrictions near the Mutsumiai side, please use designated parking near Uchifune Station or the riverbank. Note that the Uchifune Station parking fee is applicable on the event day.

Climbing the Fuji River embankments offers an elevated view of the torches, bonfires, and fireworks. You can enjoy classic festival food like yakisoba, takoyaki, and jumbo frank sausages at the food stalls. As the scale of some events has been decreasing recently, it is wise to check local updates beforehand.
