The Nanao Gion Matsuri is a historic summer festival held at Daijishu Jinja Shrine in Nanao City, Ishikawa Prefecture. Held annually on the second Saturday of July, it is a celebrated part of the iconic 'Kiriko' festivals of the Noto region. This event is recognized as a National Intangible Folk Cultural Property and was officially designated as a 'Japan Heritage' site in 2015. Local community members carry 11 massive lanterns known as 'Kiriko' (or Hoto) through the city streets. The presence of the 'Dai-Kiriko'—standing approximately 12m tall and weighing about 1 ton—is truly overwhelming and symbolizes the powerful culture of the Noto Peninsula.
The greatest draw is the sight of the giant Kiriko lanterns dancing through the darkness of night. The front of each lantern features bold calligraphy, while the back is adorned with striking warrior paintings; when lit, they create a mystical atmosphere. Accompanied by the rhythmic sounds of drums, flutes, and bells, men shout energetic chants like "Sakkasai, Sakasassai, Iyasa-sa!" as they vigorously shake and dance the heavy lanterns forward. Watching these massive structures weave through narrow streets and witnessing the climactic dance at Daijishu Jinja Shrine will sweep you into a whirlwind of excitement.

The Nanao Gion Matsuri involves very dynamic and heavy movements. The Kiriko lanterns often pass very close to buildings in narrow streets, creating an intense sensation. Please ensure you watch from a safe distance. Since the lanterns move through different locations throughout the night, it is helpful to track the route if you wish to see the procession at a specific spot.
As this is an outdoor night event, please wear comfortable clothing and bring a light jacket to adjust to temperature changes.
