Every year on May 5th, Naemura Jinja in Ryuo, Shiga Prefecture, hosts the traditional Sekku Festival. This spectacular event features the Yabusame (horseback archery) ritual, performed on a 200-meter track in front of the shrine's historic gate, which is designated as an Important Cultural Property. This is a rare opportunity to witness the profound connection between Japanese martial traditions and the power of the horse.
Watch as skilled archers gallop down a 200-meter straight track, aiming at targets from horseback. The archers complete three runs, aiming for a total of six hits. The speed and precision are truly awe-inspiring. You will also see the participants dressed in traditional ceremonial attire, including jin-gasa hats and kamishimo, creating a striking visual spectacle.
Following the Yabusame, the energetic 'Umakake' ritual takes place. Seven horses gallop across the field several times, carrying bamboo poles topped with Hinomaru (sun-emblazoned) fans. At the end of the ritual, a lively scramble occurs as participants compete to grab these fans. It is said that obtaining one of these fans brings good health and protection from illness for the entire year.
