Event Overview

The Nachi no Ogi Matsuri is a sacred annual ritual of Kumano Nachi Taisha. Based on deep devotion to the Nachi Falls, the ritual involves moving the divine spirit from the upper shrine to the lower shrine via twelve ceremonial fan-shaped mikoshi. The highlight is the 'Nachi Fire Festival,' where massive torches purify the path to the waterfall. It is a high-status ritual expressing gratitude to nature and the gods.

Highlights

The main spectacle is the fire ritual using 'O-taimatsu' (large torches) nearly 6 meters tall. The sight of blazing flames purifying the path to the waterfall is an overwhelming display of energy. You can also experience UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage 'Nachi Daigaku,' traditional 'Yamato-mai' dances, and the 'Otaue-shiki' rice-planting ceremony. It is a rare chance to witness the intersection of 'water' and 'fire' in a sacred setting.

Venue and Access

The event takes place around Kumano Nachi Taisha and Hiro-jinja (Nachi Falls).

By Car

Parking at Nachiyama is limited. If the main lots are full by 10:30, please use the temporary parking lots at the mid-level (such as Daimon-zaka) and use the free shuttle bus.

By Public Transport

Regular Kumano Gobo Kanko Bus services run to the area. Please get off at the 'Nachisan' bus stop.

Tips for Visitors

This is a dynamic experience where nature and ritual unite. The afternoon fire ritual with giant torches is the most dramatic moment. As the area is mountainous, please plan your travel time carefully.
