Mizuwakasujinja Shrine Festival (Ryufu) is a traditional ritual held at Mizuwakasujinja, the most important shrine in Okinoshima Town, Shimane Prefecture. This festival is designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Shimane Prefecture. It takes place on May 3rd during even-numbered years (such as 2026, 2028, etc.) to coincide with the annual grand festival. A signature sight of this event is the 'Yama-biki,' where local boys pull the 'Horaisan' floats—beautifully decorated with cypress leaves and artificial flowers—using two thick ropes.
The greatest charm lies in the diverse sacred rituals that preserve Japan's ancient customs. Watching the local boys, dressed in traditional attire with hachimaki headbands, pull the heavy floats is a heartwarming display of community spirit. Another breathtaking highlight is the 'Yabusame' (horseback archery) performed on the training ground; this powerful ritual is intended to drive away evil spirits and pray for a bountiful harvest. Additionally, you can experience the rich culture of Oki through performances such as the Shishimai (lion dance) and traditional dances like 'Dairaku' and 'Urana no Mai' at the Otabisho.
