Event Overview

Mito Komon Matsuri is a traditional festival held in Mito City, Ibaraki Prefecture, to honor Tokugawa Mitsukuni, the second lord of the Mito domain. Originally established in 1961 as the "Mito Tanabata Komon Matsuri," this event has become a quintessential summer tradition for the region. Since its renewal in 2019, the festival has focused on deeply rooted local traditions, such as the lantern processions and the Furusato Mikoshi parade, serving as a vital way to pass down the history and culture of Mito to the modern era.

The most iconic sights of this festival are the "Chochin Gyoretsu" (Lantern Procession), which evokes a sense of historical elegance, and the "Furusato Mikoshi" (Local Shrine Portable Shrine) parade, which embodies the high energy of the community. While the festival once featured parades with characters from famous TV dramas, it has evolved into a more traditional and authentic cultural experience. Additionally, the festivities are often accompanied by the Mito Kairakuen Fireworks Display near Lake Senba, offering a spectacular view of lights illuminating the night sky.

The main festivities take place around the Kamiichi-dori area in central Mito.

  • *Lake Senba Venue (Fireworks related)**: Lakeside of Lake Senba (Approx. 15-minute walk from Mito Station)
  • The venue is within walking distance of JR Joban Line "Mito Station."
  • You can also take the "Mito-go" highway bus from the Tokyo Station Yaesu South Exit (Platform 4) directly to the destination.

Tips for Visitors

The area around Kamiichi-dori becomes incredibly lively during the festival. To get a front-row view of the lantern procession or the shrine parades, we recommend arriving at the venue early. During the event, you may also find temporary rest areas known as "Komon-sama no Oyasumi-dokoro," where you can take a break and soak in the festive atmosphere.
