The Minakuchi Hikiyama Festival is a grand annual ritual held at Minakuchi Shrine in Koka City, Shiga Prefecture. This historic festival, which has been celebrated since the Edo period, is designated as an intangible folk cultural property of Shiga. It features the procession of 'Hikiyama'—massive, elaborately carved floats that resemble moving shrines. Reflecting the town's history as a prosperous post station along the old Tokaido road, the festival blends the sight of heavy, majestic floats with the soulful melodies of traditional Minakuchi Hayashi music.
The main attraction is the Hikiyama floats, often described as 'moving shrines' due to their intricate craftsmanship. Each year, the floats are adorned with unique 'Dashi' (decorative ornaments) that change according to a specific theme, offering a fresh visual experience every year. A true highlight is the 'Giri-mawashi,' a high-energy maneuver where the heavy floats are rotated by hand by lifting the wheels, creating a dramatic spectacle. The atmosphere is further electrified by the powerful, rhythmic sounds of drums, flutes, and bells from the Minakuchi Hayashi musicians.
The festival takes place annually on April 20. The schedule is as follows:
The festival takes place throughout the streets of Minakuchi Town, centered around Minakuchi Shrine. The floats travel from various neighborhoods through scenic paths lined with pine trees to reach the shrine.
