The Matsushima Oyster Festival is a premier culinary event celebrating the iconic winter delicacy of Matsushima, Miyagi Prefecture: fresh oysters. Held annually on the first Sunday of February, the festival centers around the Matsushima Kaigan Green Plaza. Visitors can enjoy seasonal oysters prepared in various ways, such as steamed, grilled, or fried. The event often runs alongside the "Miyagi Marugoto Horoyoi Matsuri," allowing you to enjoy a stroll through the area while sipping on premium local sake.
The main draw is the incredible variety of ways to enjoy oysters. Whether you prefer them steamed, grilled, or even deep-fried, these gourmet dishes are sure to delight any food lover. You can choose between shelled or whole oysters, and enjoy the excitement of live cooking demonstrations.
Beyond the food, the festival features a lively stage with cultural performances, including the traditional "Suzume Odori" dance and performances by local artists. Oyster quantities are limited and may sell out quickly. Please note that depending on inspection results, some oysters may be sold specifically for cooking (heat-treated). It is also prohibited to bring your own portable stoves or outside food/drinks into the venue. If you plan to enjoy the "Horoyoi Matsuri" (Sake Festival), use the stamp rally to explore the local shopping streets and enjoy the local atmosphere.
As this is a winter event, please dress warmly to stay comfortable. While there are relaxing activities like the footbath, most of the event takes place outdoors.
