Matsumae Sakura Matsuri is a major spring event held in Matsumae, the southernmost tip of Hokkaido, where history and nature beautifully intertwine. The sight of the white walls of Matsumae Castle (Fukuyama Castle) framed by approximately 10,000 cherry blossoms across 250 varieties is truly breathtaking. The highlight of this festival is the "relay blooming" effect; because the varieties range from early to late-blooming, the landscape evolves beautifully over a month-long period.
The view of cherry blossoms against the white walls of Matsumae Castle is a photographer's dream. The scenery is particularly striking around 10:00 AM when the sunlight is bright, or during the golden hour in the late afternoon when the light accentuates the delicate texture of the petals.
From sunset until approximately 21:00, special LED lights illuminate the cherry blossoms. The lighting is specifically designed to enhance the natural pink hues of the flowers, creating a dreamy, ethereal atmosphere in the quiet night. The illumination of the "Meoto Sakura" (Couple Cherry Blossoms) is a must-see.
Behind Matsumaki Shrine, you will find various food stalls offering Hokkaido's seasonal delicacies. Enjoy grilled seafood (oysters, scallops, squid, crab), local Genghis Khan (lamb BBQ), and even special seaweed bento boxes. The festival also features local traditional performances, ninja experiences, and even hot air balloon rides.
The festival runs for 23 days from April 18 (Sat) to May 10 (Sun).
The event takes place around Matsumae Park and Matsumae Castle.
Approximately 2 hours from Hakodate via Route 228. Please note that vehicle restrictions are in place around Matsumae Castle during the festival. You cannot park directly in the park; please use the designated nearby parking lots.
The starting point is JR Kikonai Station. Take the Hakodate Bus (bound for Matsumae Branch Office) from Kikonai Station, which takes about 90 minutes. The venue is a 7-minute walk from the Matsushiro bus stop.
There are paid parking lots near Matsumae Park with a capacity of about 500 cars. To avoid crowds, we recommend arriving before 9:00 AM. You may also want to check parking reservation services like "akippa" or "TokuP" in advance.
In Matsumae, the main attraction changes depending on when you visit, moving from varieties like Somei Yoshino to Nanden-zakura and multi-petaled types. Check the blooming status to time your visit perfectly.
Even if the daytime is warm, temperatures drop significantly after sunset in Hokkaido. Always bring a warm jacket if you plan to enjoy the night illuminations.
For food stalls and paid activities like the hot air balloon experience, please check local signage for details. Some food stalls may sell out early.
