Marugame Basara Festival (Marugame City: August 24)
6 min readEvent Overview
The Marugame Basara Festival is a high-energy summer event created to revitalize the city of Marugame. The term 'Basara' represents a free-spirited, unconventional, and bold way of life. Reflecting this spirit, the festival features dynamic dance performances that break away from traditional constraints.
Highlights & How to Enjoy
The main draw is the seamless blend of the rhythmic 'Basara Dance' and a spectacular fireworks display. Over 100 dance teams perform across two main areas divided into North and South zones. The fireworks are launched from the sea, creating a breathtaking effect as the light reflects off the water, painting the night sky in gold. To complete the experience, enjoy local street food like Jumbo Franks and grilled meat skewers from the many food stalls around the venue.
Schedule
The main event takes place on August 24. The schedule is as follows:
- *Dance Programs**: 11:00–20:24 (Held at North and South venues)
- *Fireworks Display**: 20:15–21:00
Venue & Access
The festival is split into two main areas: the North Venue (Mimoka, Hamacho Shopping Street, Minato Park) and the South Venue (Otemon BASARA Plaza, Otemon West, and Street venues).
- *By Train**: Approximately a 3-minute walk from JR Marugame Station.
- *By Car**:
- From Okayama: Approx. 20 mins via Setouchi Central Expressway (Sakaisu Kita IC) to Marugame Boat Race Track.
- From Matsuyama/Tokushima: Approx. 15 mins via Takamatsu Expressway (Sakaisu IC) to Marugame Boat Race Track.
- *Parking**: Free parking is available at Marugame Boat Race Track (approx. 2,200 spaces) and Marugame Municipal Nishi Junior High School. We recommend arriving early as these spots fill up quickly.
Tips for Visitors
The North and South venues offer different atmospheres for enjoying the dance. For the best view of the fireworks, the harbor area is ideal, but it becomes extremely crowded, so arrive early to secure a spot. For a more relaxed experience, consider viewing the fireworks from the vicinity of Marugame Castle, which offers a unique and scenic perspective.
What to Bring & Etiquette
As this is a long outdoor event, we recommend wearing comfortable clothing and walking shoes. When purchasing food from stalls, having small change (coins) ready will make transactions smoother. Please check the official website for specific payment methods and any reservation requirements.
