Event Overview

The Kushi Matsuri (Comb Festival) at Yasui Konpiragu is a sacred ritual to express gratitude and offer prayers for old combs and hair accessories. Based on the 'Kushizuka' (Comb Mound) established in September 1961, the ritual honors the tools that enhance the beauty of hair—often considered a woman's most precious asset. This festival is also known for bringing blessings for beauty, facial aesthetics, and healthy hair. It offers a rare chance to witness traditional culture at Yasui Konpiragu, a shrine famously known for its unique 'relationship-breaking' and 'relationship-binding' spiritual energy.

Highlights and How to Enjoy

The main highlight is the 'Jidai Fuzoku Gyoretsu' (Period Costume Parade). Women dressed in exquisite traditional attire, showcasing hairstyles ranging from the ancient Kofun period to the elegant styles of modern-day Maiko, parade through the atmospheric streets of Gion. Supported by the Kyoto Beauty Culture Club, these highly skilled recreations of historical beauty are a breathtaking sight. Additionally, you can witness the solemn 'Kurokami' (Black Hair) dance performed at the shrine's main hall and the sacred ritual of offering combs to the mound, creating a deeply moving and spiritual atmosphere.

Venue and Access

The event takes place at Yasui Konpiragu in Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto. While access is convenient, please expect heavy crowds on the day.

• *By Bus**: Take the City Bus (Route 206) from JR/Kintetsu 'Kyoto Station' and get off at 'Higashiyama Yasui' (1-minute walk).
• *By Train**: A 10-minute walk from Keihan Line 'Gion-Shijo Station' or a 15-minute walk from Hankyu Line 'Kawaramachi Station'.
• *Parking**: Limited paid parking is available, but we strongly recommend using public transportation as parking is extremely difficult during events.

Tips for Visitors

To enjoy the view smoothly, it is helpful to know the parade route in advance. The procession moves through the beautiful, historic streets of Gion, offering many vantage points. We recommend experiencing the contrast between the solemnity of the shrine ritual and the vibrant energy of the parade. Please note that the parade will be canceled in the event of rain, so please check the weather forecast.

Admission is free. Since the event involves walking and outdoor viewing, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes.
