Kurashiki Byobu Matsuri is a traditional festival held in the Honmachi, Higashimachi, and the surrounding Bikan District of Kurashiki, Okayama. Historically, during the festivities of Achi Shrine, local families would remove their wooden lattice doors to display precious folding screens and seasonal floral arrangements to welcome guests. This beautiful custom continues today, preserving the spirit of tradition and elegance. The event is part of the Japan Heritage collection, "The Story of Kurashiki: A Textile Town of East and West," offering a rare glimpse into Japan's aesthetic history.
The main attraction is the collection of magnificent folding screens and precious family heirlooms displayed at the entrances of approximately 35 homes and shops. From golden folding screens to delicate landscape paintings and seasonal floral decorations, the displays create a nostalgic atmosphere that feels like stepping back in time. As the traditional lattice doors are opened wide, you can experience the refined "iki" (chic) culture of Japan while strolling through the historic streets.
