The Kiryu Yagibushi Matsuri is one of the largest and most significant summer festivals held in the heart of Kiryu City, Gunma Prefecture. This unique celebration blends the spiritual traditions of the Kiryu Gion Festival with the rhythmic energy of the Yagibushi folk dance, creating a seamless mix of historical elegance and modern excitement. The festival takes place for three days starting from the first Friday of August every year. During this time, the central streets of Kiryu—including Honcho-dori, Suehirocho-dori, and Nishikicho-dori—transform into a massive 2.5-kilometer pedestrian zone filled with crowds and festivities.
The soul of this festival lies in the diverse performances of the traditional Yagibushi dance. You can experience everything from the prestigious All Japan Yagibushi Competition, where the best dancers compete, to the more modern and upbeat 'Dance Yagibushi' that appeals to younger generations. Don't miss the sight of the ornate Gion floats (Yatai) adorned with intricate carvings, the majestic procession of the Hoko floats, and the high-energy Jumbo Parade. As night falls, the energy reaches its peak around the central scaffolding (Yagura) in Honcho 5-chome, where dancers gather to celebrate.

The main festivities are centered in the downtown area of Kiryu City. The primary event area spans from the Kiryu Tenmangu Shrine torii gate in the north to the North Exit of Kiryu Station in the west, and down to the Nishikicho intersection in the south.
Expect large crowds throughout the festival period. The most exciting moments occur around the main stages and the central scaffolding during the All Japan Yagibushi Competition and the Dance Yagibushi segments. It is a rare opportunity to see the beauty of the traditional Gion Yatai and Hoko floats up close.
