The Kesennacho Kenka Tanabata Festival is a traditional celebration held in the Kesennacho Imaizumi district of Rikuzentakata City, Iwate Prefecture. With a history spanning approximately 900 years, this festival is a designated intangible cultural property of Iwate and is widely celebrated as one of the most unique and 'eccentric' festivals in the Tohoku region. The sight of massive floats clashing with immense force is a truly overwhelming experience.
The main highlight is the literal 'Kenka' (fight) where floats collide. Participants stretch ropes attached to their floats toward the opposing float. Upon the commanding shout of 'Hike—!' (Pull!) from the float leaders, the local community pulls the ropes in unison. The moment the two massive floats crash into each other is a breathtaking spectacle. The rhythmic sounds of traditional music (Ohayashi) echoing from within the floats further heighten the intense energy of the festival.
