Kawagoe Matsuri (also known as Kawagoe Hikawa Matsuri) is a traditional festival held around the Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine in Saitama Prefecture. With over 360 years of history, it is designated as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. The festival is also recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage and is celebrated as one of the three great festivals of the Kanto region. The streets come alive with beautifully decorated 'Dashi' (ornate floats) that showcase the enduring cultural legacy of the Edo period.
The absolute highlight of Kawagoe Matsuri is the 'Hikkawase'—a thrilling moment where massive floats meet at intersections and pass each other with intense energy. Watching these heavy, decorated floats maneuver through narrow streets is a breathtaking spectacle. The nighttime festivities are particularly magical, as the glow of traditional lanterns and the rhythmic sounds of the festival music create a truly mystical atmosphere.
Don't miss the 'Ohayashi'—the traditional music performed on the floats. The rhythmic sounds of flutes and drums echo through the streets, driving the excitement of the crowd. Against the backdrop of the historic Kurazukuri (warehouse-style) streetscape, the sight of the floats moving through the old town offers a profound sense of traditional Japanese beauty.

The event takes place throughout the Kawagoe city center, primarily around the Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine and the historic Kurazukuri street area.
Kawagoe Matsuri is a massive event, and the surrounding streets will be extremely crowded. Because traffic restrictions are in place for the float routes, we strongly recommend using public transportation. When watching the nighttime 'Hikkawase,' please be mindful of your footing, as visibility may be limited in the dark.
