Katsuura Taisho Matsuri is a historic autumn festival held annually in Katsuura City, Chiba Prefecture, with roots dating back to the late Edo period. While various districts once held separate celebrations, the festivities were unified in 1979 to form the current Katsuura City Autumn Joint Festival. Rooted in the traditions of a fishing town, this festival prays for bountiful catches and safe voyages, driven by the deep community bonds and passion of the local residents.
The festival features energetic portable shrine (mikoshi) processions. Listen for the spirited shouts of "Hora, Dairyo!" as the shrines are rhythmically swayed and lifted high. You can also observe the impressive parade of floats adorned with intricate carvings.
One of the most moving moments is the "Mikoshi no Funawatashi" (Shrine Boat Transfer). In this ritual, the portable shrine is transferred to a fishing boat at Katsuura Fishing Port, creating a traditional scene of the sea and spirit. Additionally, the Katsuura Central Shopping District comes alive with numerous food stalls, offering a chance to enjoy fresh, local seafood.
