Event Overview

The Giant Kites Festival (O-tako Age Matsuri) is a traditional celebration held at the Edogawa riverbank in Kasukabe. Its origins date back to the late Edo period, when it was believed that flying these kites could predict the success of silkworm cultivation. Over time, it evolved into a cherished tradition to celebrate the healthy growth of local children during the Boys' Day season. The sight of massive kites, meticulously handcrafted from bamboo and Washi paper over three months, ascending into the blue sky is a truly overwhelming experience.

Highlights and How to Enjoy

The absolute highlight is the sight of the massive 'O-tako' (giant kites) soaring high above. Watching kites measuring 15 meters tall, 11 meters wide, and weighing 800 kilograms being lifted simultaneously by over a hundred people is nothing short of spectacular. Surrounding the giant kites, you will see smaller 'Ko-tako' kites and even 'Commercial Kites' featuring company logos, creating a vibrant and festive atmosphere. It is a dynamic display where Japanese tradition and community spirit come alive.

The event takes place at the Edogawa riverbank (downstream from Hoshuka Bridge), located in the Nishihoshuka area.

• *Minami-Sakurai Station (Tobu Urban Park Line)**: Approximately 15 minutes via a special direct bus from the North Exit (First bus: 8:30 / Last bus: 17:30).
• *Kasukabe Station (Tobu Skytree Line)**: Approximately 35 minutes via Asahi Bus (bound for Sekiyado Central Terminal or Sekiyado Hayama Industrial Park) from the East Exit. Please alight at 'O-tako Koen Iriguchi'.
• *Tobu Dobutsu-Koen Station (Tobu Skytree Line)**: Approximately 30 minutes via Asahi Bus (bound for Sekiyado Central Terminal) from the East Exit. Please alight at 'O-tako Koen Mae'.

Participation Tips

The kite flying is a tradition preserved by the local 'Showa O-tako Culture Preservation Society.' On the first day of the festival (May 3rd), a special ceremony is held to pray for the health and happiness of children celebrating their first Boy's Day. A moving highlight of the event is the ritual of attaching papers with children's names to the kites before they take flight.
