Gion Kashiwazaki Matsuri is a traditional summer festival held annually in Kashiwazaki City, Niigata Prefecture, from July 24th to 26th. The grand climax of this celebration is the "Umi no Dai Hanabi Taikai" (Great Sea Fireworks Display) held on July 26th. Originating from the Edo-period Gion Festival offerings, this historic event is a prayer for regional peace and a way to honor the spirits. As one of the prestigious Echigo Three Great Fireworks festivals, it draws massive crowds and visitors from all over Japan.
The absolute highlight is the dynamic series of fireworks launched directly from the ocean. The scale is truly massive, featuring much more than just standard displays. You can witness the spectacle of 100 large-caliber shells fired simultaneously across a 1,500-meter scale, a thunderous sequence of 300 consecutive shells, and even simultaneous launches of three-foot-diameter shells from the sea. Beyond the fireworks, the entire city vibrates with energy during the festival period, featuring traditional folk music street parades, the powerful "Taru Niwaka" performance, and lively parades of floats and portable shrines.

Since the event is held by the sea, the temperature can drop or wind can pick up at night; bringing a light jacket or wrap is highly recommended.
