Event Overview

Kamo Taisai is a profound traditional ritual held in Kibichuo, Okayama. Recognized as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, it is celebrated as one of the three major festivals in the prefecture. With a history spanning approximately 970 years since the 11th century, this event features a rare and spectacular format called the "Yosemiya Matsuri," where portable shrines (mikoshi) from eight different shrines gather at the Soja-gu Shrine.

Highlights & What to Expect

The festival's greatest appeal lies in its sacred rituals and the high-energy climax known as "Goshinko." Around noon, spectators can enjoy traditional performing arts called "Oasobi." This includes the striking "Tachifuri" (sword swinging to dispel evil), "Boutukai" (stick fighting performed by actors in Tengu or Oni masks), and the impressive "Tsugishishi" (lion dance where performers climb onto each other's shoulders to reach great heights).

Following the performances, the highlight of the festival, the "Goshinko," begins. The sight of 8 mikoshi lined up in front of the Sujin Mon gate, being raised high simultaneously to powerful shouts, is truly breathtaking. Surrounded by ancient cedar and cypress trees over 500 years old, the atmosphere at Soja-gu Shrine offers a deep, spiritual connection to ancient Japanese culture.

Schedule

The festival is held annually on the third Sunday of October. In 2026, it will take place on October 18.

  • 06:00: Representatives of the nine shrines gather
  • 07:00–10:45: Arrival of shrines (in order: Kamo, Kaki, Matsuo, Hiyoshi, Susanoo, Hachiman, Takei, and Misho shrines)
  • 12:00: Traditional performances (Tachifuri, Shishi-mai/Tsugishishi, and Boutukai)
  • 12:30: Goshinko (The grand procession where mikoshi are raised high in unison)
  • 13:30: Return of the deities (Kangeo)
  • 15:30: Estimated end of festivities

The event is held at Kamo Sojagu Shrine in Kibichuo, Okayama.

  • *By Car**: Approximately 45 minutes from Okayama IC via the Sanyo Expressway
  • *By Public Transport**: Approximately 30 minutes by bus from JR Kinugawa Station, arriving at the "Kamo Ichiba" stop

Important Information

Kamo Taisai is a ritual that strictly adheres to ancient customs. During certain sacred moments, such as the arrival of the shrines (Nyugo), spectators may be restricted from entering certain areas of the shrine grounds. Staff will be on-site to manage the crowd and ensure the ritual proceeds smoothly. Please respect the sacred nature of the event and follow all local guidelines.
