The Kaku-no-Ichi festival at Kaku Shrine is one of the earliest autumn celebrations in Oita Prefecture. This traditional event marks the return of the deity from the nearby Usbara Hachiman Shrine to Kaku Shrine. To honor this sacred transition, locals perform Kagura (traditional Shinto theatrical dance) and other ritual dances, keeping ancient spiritual traditions alive in a vibrant, modern setting.
The festival is a unique blend of sacred ritual and lively community celebration. Visitors can wander through the shrine grounds lined with numerous food and souvenir stalls (yatai). The absolute highlight occurs on the 6th, when a special "Dedication Fireworks" display lights up the autumn sky. It is a breathtaking sight that perfectly complements the spiritual atmosphere of the Kagura performances.
The festival runs from September 1 to September 7. While various rituals and dances take place throughout the week, please note that the much-anticipated fireworks display is scheduled specifically for the 6th. Since most activities take place outdoors, wear comfortable walking shoes. As the temperature can drop in the evening, especially during the fireworks, bringing a light jacket or sweater is recommended.
