Hitoyoshi Castle Festival (One of Japan's 100 Famous Castles)

4 min read

Event Overview

Located in Hitoyoshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture, this historic festival takes place at the Hitoyoshi Castle ruins, one of Japan's 100 Famous Castles. The castle is also known as 'Sengetsu-jo' (Crescent Moon Castle) due to a crescent-shaped stone discovered during its reconstruction. Historically ruled by the Sagara clan since the Kamakura period, the site is now a beautifully maintained park. This festival brings history to life through majestic samurai processions and local traditional performing arts.

Highlights & Activities

The main attraction is the 'Mushagyo-retsu' (Samurai Procession), where participants march in full traditional armor. The sight of these warriors is truly breathtaking. You can also enjoy the 'Castle Town Parade,' featuring portable shrines (mikoshi) winding through the shopping streets, and the energetic 'Kuma no Rokutojoshi'—a traditional rhythmic dance and song style unique to the Kuma region. It is a wonderful way to experience the vibrant spirit of local Japanese culture.
