Iwase Hiki-yashari Matsuri is the annual spring festival of Iwase Suwa Shrine, held every year on May 17 and 18 in the Iwase (Higashi-Iwase) district of Toyama City. Often called the "Iwase no Kenka-yama," this is a beloved traditional ritual of Toyama Prefecture. The tradition dates back to around 1796, when decorative lanterns known as "tatemon" were first added to the floats. Today, 11 magnificent floats continue to carry the vibrant spirit and heritage of the local community.
The absolute highlight of this festival is the "Hiki-ai" (float clashing) that takes place at night. Under the cover of darkness, the massive floats, adorned with glowing "tatemon" lanterns, advance through the streets to the sound of spirited shouts. The spectacle reaches a fever pitch when the two opposing sides of the town clash head-on, pushing against each other until one side is forced to retreat. The thunderous sounds of the collision, the intense energy of the crowd, and the ethereal glow of the lanterns against the night sky create a truly dynamic and unforgettable experience.

The "Hiki-ai" involves extremely intense and fast-moving heavy floats, so it is crucial to maintain a safe distance. The areas directly behind the floats or near the pulling ropes are high-risk zones. Please follow the instructions of the police and event staff and enjoy the spectacle from the designated viewing areas. As this is a nighttime event, please prepare for the evening chill and wear comfortable footwear.
