The Itako Ayame Festival is a charming celebration held in Itako City, Ibaraki Prefecture, where the beauty of blooming Iris flowers meets the traditional culture of the water towns. As the Irises reach full bloom, the festival comes alive with the sight of the traditional 'Yomeiri-fune' (wedding boat) procession and the melodic sounds of Itako Hayashi music. The absolute highlight of this festival is the 'Yomeiri-fune' procession, which recreates a traditional wedding ceremony. You will see a bride arriving via rickshaw, accompanied by matchmakers and wedding dowries, moving gracefully toward the boat. This sight evokes a sense of nostalgic, old-world Japan. Following the procession, traditional music boats play lively tunes to add to the festive atmosphere.
Additionally, the Iris Garden serves as a stunning backdrop where the flowers are in full bloom. Since this often coincides with the blooming season of Hydrangeas, you can enjoy a rich palette of seasonal colors. We also recommend visiting nearby historical sites such as Chokosho-ji Temple, the historic Isoyama Residence, or the memorial for the poet Kobayashi Issa to deepen your cultural experience.
The main event, the Yomeiri-fune procession, typically takes place on specific days in June (around June 10th). To catch the full spectacle, including the arrival of the 'Hydrangea Girls' and traditional dances, we recommend arriving at the venue well in advance of the procession start time. The festival is held around the Suigo Itako Ayame Garden in Itako City. The nearest station is JR Itako Station. During the festival, special seasonal trains may be available. The garden and event sites are within walking distance from the station. There are also local dining options and accommodations like Kanpo-no-Yado Itako nearby.
To get a great view of the wedding boat procession, arrive early. For a procession starting around 11:00 AM, we suggest being at the station by 10:30 AM. The Iris Garden features well-maintained walkways and bridges, making it a perfect place for a relaxing stroll while enjoying the water views.
As the festival takes place near wetlands and water, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Since weather can change quickly near the water, bringing a compact umbrella or rain gear is a good idea.
