The Iriya Asagao Festival is a historic summer event held around the Iriya Kishibojin (Shinzen-ji) Temple in Taito, Tokyo. With a tradition dating back to the late Edo period, this festival has been celebrated for over 60 years as a quintessential Tokyo summer experience. Every year in early July, the neighborhood is transformed by approximately 120,000 blooming morning glories, creating a breathtaking display of color.
The main attraction is the sheer volume of morning glories decorating the streets. Seeing the colorful flowers displayed in traditional lantern-shaped containers is a stunning sight. You can discover various varieties cultivated by local producers and researchers. Visitors can also enjoy temple visits to Iriya Kishibojin and purchase seasonal items like the exclusive "Asagao Omamori" (morning glory charms) or beautifully designed "Tenugui" hand towels. It is a wonderful way to soak in the nostalgic atmosphere of old Tokyo.
The festival takes place for three days every year on July 6, 7, and 8.
The event is held at Iriya Kishibojin (Shinzen-ji) Temple and the surrounding streets (near Iitoi-dori).
During the festival, nearby streets become pedestrian-only zones filled with many stalls. Because it can get very crowded and lively, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Since morning glories are most vibrant in the morning, an early visit is ideal for seeing them in full bloom.
