Event Overview

The Ikenoue Misogi Festival is a traditional Shinto ritual held annually on the second Saturday of December at Katsuragake Shrine in Ikenoue-cho, Gifu City. This event has been passed down through generations as a ceremony to welcome the deities. Historically held in the 10th month of the lunar calendar, it now takes place in December. The centerpiece of the festival is the 'Misogi' ritual, where men dressed in traditional Etchu Fundoshi (loincloths) enter the clear waters of the Nagara River to purify themselves. This powerful display of strength and devotion is a symbol of the deep-rooted culture of this region.

Highlights & What to Expect

The most thrilling part of the festival is the energetic procession of men marching from Katsuragake Shrine toward the Nagara River, followed by the intense purification ritual. Watching the participants brave the river to drive away misfortune and pray for well-being is a deeply moving and dynamic experience. Visitors are also welcome to participate; the first 100 people to arrive can receive a complimentary fundoshi (loincloth) and hachimaki (headband) to join the ritual. It is a unique blend of solemn tradition and high-energy community spirit.

Schedule

The festival consists of several key rituals throughout the day and night. Please note the timing for the main events:

  • 13:30 - Misogi Hajimatsuri (Opening Ritual)
  • 15:00 - General Misogi (Public Participation)
  • 21:00 - Yaku Misogi (Purification Ritual)
  • 00:00 - Kamimukai-sai (Deity Welcoming Ceremony)

Venue & Access

Katsuragake Shrine is accessible via Gifu Bus. It is recommended to check the bus schedule in advance.

  • *Via Chusetsu-bashi**: From JR Gifu Station or Meitetsu Gifu Station, take a bus bound for Gifu University/University Hospital or Sagiyama via Chusetsu-bashi. Get off at 'Chusetsu-bashi' and walk for about 10 minutes.
  • *Via Shimanimachi**: Take a bus bound for Higashikada and get off at 'Shimanimachi'. It is a 5-minute walk from there.
  • *Via Ikenoue**: Take a bus bound for Minami-kakase, Riverside Mall, Morella Gifu, or Saigo. Get off at 'Ikenoue' (three stops after Chusetsu-bashi). It is a 3-minute walk from there.

Tips for Participation

If you wish to personally experience the 'Misogi' ritual, we recommend arriving early. Participation for the general public is limited to approximately the first 100 people, who will be provided with a free fundoshi and headband. Understanding this system will help your experience go smoothly. Also, keep in mind that the atmosphere changes significantly as the rituals progress into the night.

What to Bring & Etiquette

If you plan to enter the river, you will use the provided fundoshi and headband, but please prepare for the cold temperatures at night. We recommend bringing warm clothing for spectators. For specific details on required items, please check the official local information.
