Event Overview

Iisaka Kenka Matsuri is the annual autumn festival held at Iisaka Hachiman Shrine in the historic Iisaka Onsen area of Fukushima City. With a history spanning over 300 years, it is celebrated as one of Japan's three great 'Kenka Matsuri' (fighting festivals). Originally a ritual to pray for victory in battles and games, it has evolved into a grand celebration to pray for bountiful harvests and local prosperity, drawing crowds into a whirlwind of excitement.

Highlights & What to Expect

The most breathtaking spectacle occurs after nightfall, when six massive festival floats (yatai) engage in intense, physical clashes. Local participants attempt to block the way of the portable shrine, leading to a dramatic collision of floats. The sight of swaying lanterns, the creaking of the heavy wooden structures, and the thunderous roar of the drums create an overwhelming sensory experience.

Furthermore, the festival's drumming follows the tradition of Kyoto's Gion-bayashi. The rhythmic patterns, such as 'Sagari-han' and 'Miyairi,' lend a sense of ritualistic dignity and heroic strength to the event. The deep, resonant sounds of the drums are essential to feeling the true spirit of the festival.

Schedule

The festival takes place over three days, centered around the first Saturday of October. The structure is as follows:

• Yoimatsuri (Eve Festival)
• Honmatsuri (Main Festival): Held on Saturday. After the portable shrine procession, the six floats depart from the Otabisho for the intense float clashes.
• Atomatsuri (After-festival)

The event takes place around Iisaka Hachiman Shrine and the surrounding Iisaka Onsen streets in Fukushima City. The main stages are the local neighborhoods including Kamimachi, Takinogawa, Wakakami, Tatsuna, Yokomachi, and Sanka.

The festival is incredibly high-energy. During the float clashes, there will be significant vibrations and loud noises. When spectating, please stay mindful of your surroundings and the movement of the crowds while enjoying the powerful float processions and traditional drumming.
