Ichiyakanjo-sai is a sacred ritual preserved at Nozato Sumiyoshi Jinja in Nishiyodogawa-ku, Osaka. Designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Osaka, this ceremony originated as a prayer to protect the community from natural disasters and plagues. While the origins involve solemn legends, today it is celebrated as a beautiful and graceful traditional event.
The most captivating moment is the procession of seven young girls, chosen from the local community, carrying seven beautifully decorated offerings (oke). Some of the ritual tools bear inscriptions from the Genroku era (1702), allowing you to feel the weight of centuries of history. The ceremony is also deeply connected to the legend of "Iwami Jutaro's Baboon Hunt," a tale of a hero who defeated a mythical creature to protect the land. This fusion of history and folklore creates a truly mystical atmosphere.
