Iba no Sakashidashi Matsuri is a traditional ritual held at Sanpo Sanjinja Shrine, located on the slopes of Mt. Kinugasa in Higashiomi City, Shiga Prefecture. Designated as a Prefectural Intangible Folk Cultural Property, it is celebrated as one of the most unique and striking "ki-sai" (extraordinary festivals) of the Omi region.
During this ceremony, the young men of the local community powerfully drag the heavy portable shrine (mikoshi) down from the mountainside toward the large torii gate at the foot of the hill. It is a dynamic display of human energy and the raw power of nature.
The main spectacle is the movement of the mikoshi along a steep, roughly 500-meter path. The route is dotted with treacherous, cliff-like sections that demand immense strength. Watching the shrine being pulled through these difficult terrain points amidst the spirited shouts of the participants is a truly awe-inspiring sight.
Spectators will feel a sense of intense suspense and excitement as the mikoshi navigates the most difficult parts of the descent. This thrilling interaction with the natural landscape offers a unique experience rarely found in other Japanese festivals.
