Event Overview

The Horo Matsuri, held at Kooya Hachiman Jinja in Kawagoe City, Saitama, is a designated Intangible Folk Cultural Property of the prefecture. Locally known as the "Horo-kake Matsuri," this is a deeply rooted traditional ritual. The most striking feature is the "Horo-shoikko" ceremony, where selected elementary school boys lead the portable shrine (mikoshi). Dressed in traditional attire as a rite of passage, these children represent the strength of Japanese spiritual culture as they are guided by the local community.

Highlights & What to Expect

The main highlight is the "Horo-shoikko" procession. You will see young boys wearing traditional "Jinbaori" (battle coats) and facial makeup, carrying heavy "Horo" (capes/backpacks) on their backs. Led by a Tengu performer, four boys march in a single file ahead of the mikoshi, creating a powerful and dramatic sight. As the boys perform the "Roppo-fumu" (stepping movements), the crowd erupts with rhythmic shouts of "Yoisho!", creating an incredible sense of unity and energy that connects the spectators to the local spirit.
