Located at Cape Shionomisaki in Kushimoto Town, Wakayama Prefecture—the southernmost tip of Honshu island—this traditional fire festival is held every January. The centerpiece is the "Shibayaki" (grass burning) ritual, a practice of burning dried grass to clear pests and encourage new growth, symbolizing a harmonious relationship with nature. Watching flames engulf approximately 100,000 square meters of landscape is a breathtaking sight that attracts photographers from around the world.
The most dramatic moments occur from dusk into the night. The high-energy fire arrow ritual (Hiya-shashiki), spectacular fireworks, and the moment the grass is ignited create a mystical and powerful atmosphere. Visitors can also enjoy traditional performances by local groups such as the Kushimoto-bushi and Shionomisaki-bushi preservation societies, as well as the Kushimoto Town Turkish Culture Association. The festival also offers a taste of local hospitality through food stalls selling regional specialties and serving warm "Shorasan Nabe" (hot pot) to keep guests cozy.
The 2027 event is scheduled for January 16. Please note that the schedule is subject to change based on weather conditions.
The venue is the grassy area near the Shionomisaki Observatory. This stunning location offers a majestic view of the Pacific Ocean, providing a perfect backdrop for the festival.
This is a nature-based traditional ritual. Since the main spectacle takes place from evening to night, we recommend arriving early in the afternoon to enjoy the local food stalls and traditional performances while waiting for the climactic fire display. Be sure not to miss the high-energy "Mochi-maki" and the fire arrow ritual.
