The Hida Takayama Tezutsu Hanabi is a traditional event held annually in connection with "Yaku-no-hi" (the day of warding off misfortune). This event is deeply spiritual, carrying prayers for both the participants and the spectators to drive away bad luck. It is a powerful symbol of the historic culture and craftsmanship of the Hida Takayama region.
The main highlight is the heroic display by the Hida Takayama Tezutsu-gumi group, who launch fireworks while being showered in a cascade of sparks. Tezutsu Hanabi involves controlling fire using traditional techniques, allowing you to experience the intense, vibrating roar and the sight of sparks dancing wildly right before your eyes. It is much more than a beautiful light show; it is a visceral, full-body experience that resonates in your chest. This event is traditionally held on August 9th. The upcoming scheduled date is Saturday, August 8, 2026. The display is expected to run from 19:30 to 21:00. We recommend arriving early to feel the weight of this traditional ritual as the sparks illuminate the dark night sky.
The venue is the area around Miyamae Bridge and Fudo Bridge along the Miyagawa River in the center of Takayama. It is conveniently located about a 15-minute walk from Takayama Station, making it easily accessible from the city center. However, please note that the area is expected to be very crowded on the day of the event, so we recommend allowing plenty of travel time.
This is not just a tourist spectacle, but a ritual rooted in the local community's tradition of "warding off misfortune." Because the performance is highly dynamic with flying sparks, please be prepared if you choose to watch from a close distance. As this is a nighttime event, please be mindful of the darkness and the drop in temperature.
