The Somin-bukuro Festival at Saijamine Shrine is a traditional ritual held on March 17 at Saijamine Shrine in Osako, Hanamaki City, Iwate Prefecture. The most striking feature of this festival is the high-energy "Somin-bukuro battle" that follows the sacred Shinto rituals. The sight of men pushing and competing intensely to claim the sacred bag creates a powerful atmosphere that captivates all onlookers.
The main highlight is the fierce struggle for the Somin-bukuro. Inside the bag are 365 wooden game pieces, each marked with a zodiac sign. Watching the men push through the crowd along the path to claim the bag is a truly impressive sight. The person who successfully holds the bag at the end is granted the precious pieces. We recommend enjoying the contrast between the solemnity of the Shinto rituals and the sudden burst of intense energy during the battle.
