The Hansho Daikoku Autumn Festival (Eto Kigan-sai) is a seasonal celebration held at Shimogamo Jinja, one of Kyoto's most historic shrines. The festival honors Hansho Daikoku-no-kami, the deity of prosperity, longevity, and successful business ventures. The connection to prosperity stems from the sacred 'Go-go Masu' (five-measure rice box) used in the shrine's rituals. Set against the crisp autumn air, this event offers a unique blend of sacred ritual and festive energy.
The centerpiece of this festival is the performance of Gagaku (ancient imperial court music) and traditional dance at the 'Hashidono' pavilion. Watching these sacred melodies and movements is a rare opportunity to witness the spiritual essence of Japan. Beyond the rituals, the shrine grounds transform into a lively festival ground with numerous food stalls (yatai) lining the paths.
