Located in the historic Misasa Onsen area of Tottori Prefecture, the Hanayu Matsuri is a significant annual event held to celebrate the birth of Buddha and pray for bountiful harvests and business prosperity. The highlight of this festival is the 'Jinsho,' a massive rope-pulling ceremony designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan. Using wisteria vines harvested from the surrounding mountains, a colossal rope approximately 80 meters long and weighing an incredible 2 tons is braided together. This ritual serves as a profound symbol of community unity and strength.
The most breathtaking moment is the 'Jinsho' rope-pulling competition. Watching the crowds divide into East and West teams to pull the massive wisteria rope is a truly visceral and awe-inspiring spectacle. Local legend says a win for the East brings a bountiful harvest, while a win for the West brings business prosperity. The tension and heat of the competition are unique to this season. Beyond the main event, the festival features various cultural displays, including ceremonies at Misasa Shrine, a charming children's procession (Chigo-gyoretsu) through the hot spring streets, and lively children's mikoshi parades.
