Event Overview

Hanawa Neputa is a traditional Tanabata festival passed down through generations in the Hanawa district of Kazuno City, Akita Prefecture. The festival is famous for its massive 'Osho' lanterns—towering over 5 meters and shaped like Shogi (Japanese chess) pieces—and giant drums with faces reaching 2 meters wide. These iconic structures parade through the streets, showcasing the vibrant history and spirit of the region.

Highlights & What to Expect

The true climax occurs on August 8th with the 'Nemuri Nagashi' ceremony. As the massive Osho lanterns line up at Inamura Bridge over the Yoneshiro River, they are set ablaze and floated downstream. The sight of the burning lanterns against the night sky, accompanied by the thunderous beat of giant drums and spectacular fireworks, is an overwhelming and mystical experience. It is a perfect blend of traditional Japanese aesthetics and a high-energy, elemental spectacle involving fire and light.

Tips for Visitors

The 'fire-floating' ritual on August 8th is the most popular event and attracts large crowds. We highly recommend arriving early to secure a good viewing spot near Inamura Bridge or along the riverbank. As this is an outdoor night event, please stay aware of your surroundings for safety.
