The Hanamatsuri festival, held in Toei, Aichi Prefecture, is a sacred ritual that has been preserved since the Kamakura period. In 1976, it was designated as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. The festival is held to drive away evil spirits and pray for bountiful harvests and good health. The Misono district version is specifically categorized as the 'Oiri-style,' characterized by its elegant, graceful dances and powerful, rhythmic drumming. It is a profound cultural experience that allows you to feel the weight of history and the deep devotion of the local community.
The defining feature of the Misono district dance is its 'elegance.' The performers move with a beautiful, sweeping motion—spreading their arms wide on one leg—resembling a crane in flight, which is a unique charm distinct from other regions. As night falls, the atmosphere becomes truly mystical. The climax features the appearance of various demons, such as the Yamami-ki and Sakaki-ki, creating a breathtaking spectacle in the darkness. The most intense part of the festival occurs between 10:00 PM and 4:00 AM. Amidst the thunderous beat of the drums, spectators join in the excitement by chanting 'Te-ho-he!' to create a powerful sense of unity.
