Hanamatsuri (Kamikurokawa District) is a traditional Kagura ritual passed down through generations in the Kamikurokawa area of Toyone Village, Aichi Prefecture. This sacred event takes place at the historic Kumano Shrine, a site of immense cultural value housing designated prefectural cultural assets, including wooden statues of Fudo Myoo. The powerful performances and the spiritual atmosphere of the shrine offer a profound connection to Japanese heritage.
Highlights & What to Expect
The main attraction is the dynamic Kagura dance performed by actors wearing striking red costumes and fierce demon masks. The ritual, often accompanied by rising steam and a sense of otherworldly mystery, provides a truly transcendental experience. While the festival is a winter event, the area is also famous for its beautiful cherry blossoms and night illuminations in spring, offering different charms throughout the seasons. It is a perfect way to feel the deep spirituality of Japan.
Schedule
This event takes place from 5:00 PM on January 3rd until approximately 10:00 AM on January 4th. The most intense ritualistic dances occur during the night and early morning hours. We recommend staying to witness the full progression of the sacred performance.

The event is held at Kumano Shrine in Kamikurokawa, Toyone Village.

- From Toei IC via San-en Nanshin Expressway: approx. 21km
- From JR Toei Station, take the village bus toward "Oira" and walk for 10 minutes.
Important Information
This is a community-protected traditional ritual. Visitors are asked to observe the ceremonies quietly and respectfully. As the event is held in January, temperatures will be extremely low. Please dress in heavy winter clothing to stay warm. While basic facilities are available, please be prepared for limited amenities.
