The Hamasaki Gion Festival (Hamasaki Gion Yamakasa) is a traditional ritual dedicated to Suwa Shrine in Hamasaki, Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture. Its origins date back to 1753, when local leaders, inspired by the grandeur of Kyoto's Gion Festival and Hakata's festivities, established this event to pray for bountiful harvests and prosperous business. The festival features three massive Yamakasa floats, standing approximately 15m tall and weighing about 5t, which parade through the town accompanied by the rhythmic sounds of flutes, drums, and shamisen.
The main draw is the sheer scale of the spectacle. Watching the 15m-tall floats dominate the streetscape is a breathtaking sight. A major highlight is the 'O-magiri,' where the floats perform dynamic turns at the shrine or within the local neighborhood. The beauty of the floats illuminated by lanterns at night creates a magical atmosphere. Additionally, the unique 'Hamasaki-style' float structures and the soulful melodies of the traditional music provide a deep connection to Japan's cultural heritage.
