Hamaori-sai is a deeply rooted traditional festival held annually on Marine Day in July at Nishihama Coast, Chigasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture. The highlight of this event is the "Misogi" (purification) ritual, where participants carry heavy Mikoshi (portable shrines) directly into the ocean waves. While the ritual used to involve more intense movements, it has evolved into a more inclusive ceremony where the shrines are immersed in the water, allowing more people, including women and children, to participate in the community spirit.
The most breathtaking moment is seeing numerous Mikoshi approach the shoreline and plunge into the waves. This sight vividly demonstrates the Japanese culture of "Misogi" (purification by water) and is a truly overwhelming spectacle for spectators. You will also hear the energetic shouts of "Chigasaki Jinku" during the procession. It is a perfect blend of a sacred historical ceremony and a high-energy community celebration that brings the local area to life.
