The Hakodate Sea Winter Fireworks is a signature winter event held in early February, symbolizing the season in Hakodate. Approximately 2,000 fireworks are launched over Hakodate Bay, creating a magical atmosphere alongside the city's famous night views. The display takes place near the Toyokawa Pier (off the coast of the Hakodate International Hotel). The area features food booths, allowing visitors to enjoy seasonal winter flavors while watching the show.
The main highlight is the brilliant display of fireworks reflecting off the sea surface under the crisp, clear winter air. The light reflecting on the water creates a truly mesmerizing scene. To stay warm, you can enjoy hot gourmet food from the nearby food booths. Additionally, the surrounding streets are often decorated with beautiful illuminations, adding to the festive atmosphere of the city.
The event is held on February 8. The fireworks display lasts for about 20 minutes, from 20:00 to 20:20. Please note that the schedule may change depending on the year, so please check the official website for the most up-to-date information.
The launch site is the waters off Toyokawa Pier in Hakodate Bay. Access is very convenient, located just an 8-minute walk from JR Hakodate Station. There is no dedicated parking for the event, so please use nearby paid parking lots if driving.
The main viewing area near the food booths offers a front-row experience. You can enjoy the powerful fireworks alongside local Hakodate specialties. For a different perspective, you can also view the fireworks and the stunning night scenery from locations such as the summit of Mt. Hakodate, Hachiman-zaka, or Nijoken-zaka.
February in Hakodate is extremely cold, especially near the coast. Please prepare thoroughly with heavy coats, thermal wear, and heat packs (kairo). Food booths are available at the venue for dining. Please check the official website for specific rules or reservation requirements.
