The Haguro-san Bonten Matsuri is a traditional annual festival held at Haguro-san Jinja in Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture, boasting a history of approximately 300 years. The festival is held to pray for bountiful harvests and the safety of families. The most striking feature is the "Bonten"—massive poles about 15 meters long, constructed from bamboo, which are carried through the streets. Watching the local youth in traditional happi coats carry these colorful, decorated poles up the shrine's approach is a truly breathtaking sight.
The absolute highlight is the sight of the giant Bonten poles ascending toward the shrine amidst powerful rhythmic chants. The combination of the solemnity of the ritual and the raw energy of the local community creates a dynamic spectacle that captivates all onlookers. During the festival, the streets come alive with approximately 100 food stalls and vendors, creating a festive and bustling atmosphere. Be sure to look for stalls featuring local specialties like "Yuzu" (citrus). In recent years, the event has also embraced modern touches, such as performances blending traditional elements with contemporary styles.
The festival is held annually on the third Saturday of November.

The procession of the Bonten poles and the ritual at the shrine are high-energy events. Because the food stall area becomes extremely crowded, we recommend moving early to ensure you can easily purchase your favorite snacks or local products (such as Yuzu-based treats). Additionally, the paths leading to the shrine have some slopes, so please prepare accordingly.
